From Tokens to Fields: Measuring Drift Differently
Most AI labs measure drift per token — how far a word, byte, or packet has wandered from its training distribution. It’s statistical, surface-level, and often blind to the collapse of meaning itself.
At the Curvature Lab, we measure drift per field unit. Instead of tokens, we use Field Syntax Units (FSUs) — structural invariants that span music, math, language, and code. Each FSU carries metrics like κ (curvature), σ (density), ε (jitter), CRI (coupling), and F (flow). Together, they tell us whether coherence is surviving, bending, or breaking.
The bridge is curvature. Correlation shows you the surface. Coherence shows you survival. Curvature measures how meaning bends before it breaks.
That is why Meaning 2.0 is not another token metric. It’s a new grammar for truth in machine-mediated reality.
